2015 Yamaha YZF-R1

A double-pronged attack is rumoured to be on the cards for 2015, with a homologation special joined by a lower-spec ‘casual’ version

Images of the purported 2015 model Yamaha YZF-R1 have been circulating for a while now, and the consensus appears to be that two variants will become available: a souped-up hotrod in the mould of Honda’s CBR1000RR SP, joined by a lower-spec ‘casual’ version. The two names would be YZF-R1M and YZF-R1S respectively – ‘M’ the sportier part of the equation.

Of course, there will still be nothing calm about the standard YZF-R1, with well over 200hp in the pipeline for the machine which last had a major update in 2007.

Aesthetic changes are expected to be relatively mild for the 2015 models, with updates to electronics expected to be the biggest ticket item, which should put the two R1s at least on a par with Kawasaki – the last Japanese manufacturer to make wholesale updates to its one-litre superbike.

The upcoming Cologne show should reveal all, and if there’s a no-show there EICMA – to be held in Milan from November 6-9 – will take centre stage for the updated YZF-R1.
