2015 Yamaha YZ250FX

A closed-course competition machine that is “massaged just enough to race cross-country events”

Yamaha has KTM well and truly in its sights with the new YZ250FX – or a race version of the revamped WR250F (review here) if you want to look at it another way.

The FX has no lights, “minimal off-road fluff”, electric start, and retuned suspension. In other words, a motocross bike tweaked for off-road racing – something which KTM has made an art form out of with its XC line-up for the past decade.

The FX features the rearward slanted, fuel injected, 249cc, DOHC four-stroke engine with four titanium valves, bilateral beam frame, KYB suspension, electric starter, aluminium side stand, 18-inch rear wheel, and a wide-ratio six-speed transmission.

Price is $11,499, with an off-road kit also available for around $500 so it can meet recreational registration regulations in places like Victoria.

Bikesales will be riding the YZ250FX in New Zealand early next month, about the same time as it goes on sale in Australia.
