Yamaha's stand at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show includes a motorcycle-riding robot called, in a rather straightforward manner, 'MotoBot', which combines the company's robotics and motorcycle expertise.
The video is below and, other than the grating digitalised voice, making racing legend Valentino Rossi the inspiration for the robot's riding style makes a lot of sense — but no jokes about Sepang please…
The MotoBot is riding a modified YZF-F1M with 'training wheels' and a modified frame, and all we get is a 100km/h straight line riding exercise at this stage, but the Iwata-based company will obviously be looking to take that a step further in future evolution of MotoBot. In other words, riding a proper bike and taking in bends on a real circuit — not an industrial yard.
Beyond that, racing may be on the cards in future generations — but no egos please. Information is scarce on MotoBot, but Yamaha did say this in its media release: "We want to apply the fundamental technology and know-how gained in the process of this challenge to the creation of advanced rider safety and rider-support systems and put them to use in our current businesses, as well as using them to pioneer new lines of business."
We'll have more news on the other bikes in the Yamaha booth in Tokyo soon.
