Following on from an impromptu showing to American journalists in mid-June, American brand Erik Buell Racing (EBR) has now officially unveiled the 2015 model 1190SX naked bike.
The 2015 EBR 1190SX is a stripped-down version of the 1190RX, and has exactly the same chassis as its sportsbike colleague, including the aluminium frame, Showa suspension and massive 386mm front disc.
The obvious differences between the two are the lack of a fairing for the 1190SX, while the naked also has a handlebar instead of racing-inspired clip-ons, which should amount to a much more upright and comfortable riding position.
As with all EBR sport bikes, the 1190SX features many innovations to optimise handling and performance, such as fuel in the frame for lower weight and centralised mass, hubless wheels and perimeter brake rotors for lower unsprung weight. There’s also EBR’s proprietary Controlled Swirl Induction, which improves power and fuel economy while lowering exhaust emissions.
EBR founder and chief technical officer Erik Buell is no stranger to streetfighter-style sportsbikes, having introduced the S1 Lightning in 1995.
“The streetfighter classification, which was so revolutionary when we first came to market, is now being used by marketing people for all sorts of motorcycles, including some thinly disguised standard bikes that have detuned or obsolete powertrains,” said Buell. “So, perhaps the appropriate new name for a bike like the 1190SX is ‘Superfighter’.”
Performance is also the same as the 1190RX: 185hp at the crankshaft and over 135Nm of torque.
The 1190SX will be available in Frost Bite White, Racing Red and Galactic Black liveries, and is expected to land in Australia early spring 2014. It will go on sale at $23,490 with a two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and 24 months premium roadside assistance as standard.
