Motorcycling Australia (MA) has announced plans to revive the ailing Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), and will now return to a management structure it last used in the early nougties.
The championship will be “centrally managed” by MA, with plans afoot to hold 4-5 rounds, beginning at Phillip Island from February 20-22 as the major undercard to world superbikes.
MA will co-promote the rounds (other than world superbike) with state-based promoters, similar to a structure that was last used in 2003.
No other details were divulged in the media release that came though from MA late afternoon on August 22, with classes and rules to be confirmed in the coming weeks - and hopefully a calendar not long after that. Further afield, MA plans to return the ASBK to Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
ASBK reached a nadir in 2014, with only two underwhelming rounds at Queensland Raceway and Phillip Island – with separate promoters. IEG, which had been the promoter since 2009, pulled the pin after Queensland Raceway, with MA taking over the baton for Phillip Island.
While the once mighty ASBK languished in 2014, the rival Australasian Superbike Championship has flourished with all of the nation’s top riders in action. Any chance of a merger between the two series has now seemingly evaporated with the MA ASBK announcement for 2015.
