2014 Yamaha Viking side-by-side

Will replace the long-standing Rhino in the Yamaha side-by-side family, but like its predecessor it's a workhorse aimed at farmers and primary producers

Yamaha’s newest side-by-side vehicle has been unveiled, and will be called the Viking.

The three-passenger Viking is still powered by the 686cc, liquid-cooled, fuel injected, SOHC powerplant that’s housed in the Rhino, but its larger capacity air intake system is claimed to improve overall engine performance, as well as making for a cleaner operation.

The engine is mated to an Ultramatic transmission, and there’s high and low range drive in 2WD, 4WD and fully locked differential 4WD.

Fuel capacity has been increased from 30 to 36 litres, and suspension travel is also 20mm (185 to 205) longer. Ground clearance has slipped marginally from 305 to 299mm.

The chassis design includes a pass-through floor, making it possible to enter and exit the vehicle from either side. The rear cargo bed is made of steel, and also sits above the engine.

Wet weight is 614kg, and electronic power steering is an option. The Viking tracks on 12-inch wheels, and there’s an LCD instrument panel with speedometer, odometer, dual trip meter, hour meter, 4WD status, transmission position, clock and fuel gauge.

Yamaha Motor Australia still hasn’t advised of availability and price for the local market.
