2014 Yamaha MT-07

Another addition to the rapidly growing ‘Masters of Torque' range, this time in the form of a parallel twin with a displacement of 689cc

There’s no doubt that Yamaha is pushing hard on its MT – ‘Masters of Torque – range of motorcycles, and a new addition has recently been announced – the MT-07.

This one’s a 689cc parallel twin, with many of the design and ergonomic elements of the MT-09 (launch review here), including a mass forward look and upright riding position. The engine also has the 'crossplane philosophy' that places all its focus on ‘combustion torque’ instead of ‘inertia torque’. It runs a 270-degree crank with an uneven firing interval.

There’s also the signature ‘Z-shape’ – formed by the air intake-style scoops and the short exhaust header pipes – confirming its strong MT heritage. There's a steel backbone frame, and the rake and trail are 25.5 degrees and 90mm respectively.

Yamaha claims 75hp at 9000rpm, and 68Nm at 6500rpm from the power pack. The compression ratio is 11.5:1.

The biggest frustration for Yamaha Motor Australia (YMA) is that the MT-07 falls just 29cc short of making it eligible as a LAMS bike for our states and territories. Bikesales Network sources suggest that YMA is in discussions with head office about finding a way around the capacity conundrum. Watch this space.
