Bikesales Network was blown away by the RZR XP 900 last year (click here for that review) but just as the smoke has cleared Polaris has gone one better, lifting the lid on its new RZR XP 1000.
The company has released some reasonably detailed information on what will be its new SSV flagship, which is set to go on sale in the US in coming weeks at US$19,999.
The new model is powered by a ProStar 1000 engine – a 999cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected parallel-twin boasting 107hp in a package weighing a claimed 625kg. Polaris says it’s the most powerful engine to find its way into an SSV – in comparison, Can-Am’s Maverick 1000 X rs pumps out a claimed 101hp, but for an appreciably lower dry weight of 588kg (click here to read the review of that model).
Polaris says over 80 per cent of the engine’s peak torque is available from 3500rpm all the way through to redline. The driveline has been tweaked to handle the extra go, as has the SSV’s gearing.
The RZR XP 1000 has 342mm of ground clearance and it rides on Walker Evans shocks with 457mm of rear wheel travel and 406mm of front wheel travel. All four are adjustable for preload and compression, while the model rides on 14-inch cast rims shod with Maxxis Bighorn rubber.
Polaris’s High Performance On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive system is said to be 80 per cent stronger than its predecessor, while electronic power steering requires only a light tough at the wheel. Slowing the show are twin-piston calipers at all four corners, gripping 248mm vented discs.
A new tubular-steel frame has been employed – Polaris claims it offers improved rigidity and strength – while new seats are mounted on sliders and feature tool-less adjustment.
The RZR XP 1000’s feature list is extensive, to say the least. Catching buyers’ eyes is a 50 per cent larger glovebox, a larger cargo box with additional tie-down points, twin removable floor drains, and a new charging system with a 575cca, 44Ah battery to power a choice of dozens of accessories.
The model will hit the market armed with a lengthy list of factory options, in White Lightning or Titanium Matte Metallic colour schemes. No word yet on Australian pricing or availability – watch this space.
