2014 Motus MST and MSTR

The production versions of the all-American sportstourer have been unveiled at Laguna Seca, with the sportier MSTR model pumping out 180hp from its 1650cc V-four

The Motus name has been oft-mentioned on the Bikesales Network in recent years, as the Alabama-made motorcycle moved from prototype to production.

Well, the wraps have finally come off the 2014 models, which are now on sale in America two years after they were first unveiled. The two versions are the MST and souped-up MSTR, which share the same 1650cc (100ci) liquid-cooled, fuel-injected V-four engine and Ohlins NIX upside-down forks. Both bikes produce 162Nm of torque, but the MSTR is claimed to top out at 180hp compared to the MST’s 160hp.

The 102kg V4 engine was originally planned to have direct fuel injection, however a last minute rethink forced the American start-up company to revert from direct injection to traditional port fuel injection – although it’s still producing some serious firepower.

The MST is equipped with a progressive rear monoshock with remote preload adjuster, while the MSTR has a higher-quality Ohlins TTX rear shock.

Other differences include:

  • Radial-mount Brembo calipers on the MST, compared to Brembo M4 monobloc calipers on the MSTR;
  • Forged aluminium wheels on the MST, compared to carbon-fibre wheels on the MSTR; and
  • One power port on the MST compared to three on the MSTR.

Standard components include the removable side cases, a TFT colour LCD instrument panel, centrestand, adjustable windscreen, adjustable handlebars, and a 720-watt alternator.

Accessories offered for both models include a heated seat, heated grips, mid and full tour windscreens, a lower seat by Sargent, and a 30-litre top case with rear deck.

The MST will retail in America for $30,795, but no price as yet for the MSTR.
