The world’s largest motor sport garden party – the Goodwood Festival of Speed – has adopted the theme: “Addicted to winning” for its 22nd running in the West Sussex countryside on June 26-29 , 2014.
Goodwood owner Lord March was joined at the Bonhams auction house in London on March 20 by Formula 1 legends Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees – the latter now celebrating the 50th anniversary of his 1964 world title this year by announcing that he will drive a Ferrari 158 – among other cars – up the iconic 1.16-mile hill climb.
Among the highlights announced for the Festival of Speed were NASCAR’s most successful driver Richard ‘The King’ Petty, 15-time grand prix motorcycle world champion Giacomo Agostini (pictured) and nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb all confirming their presences.
Other two-wheel showstoppers will include Agostini’s fellow 500cc world champions Wayne Gardner and Freddie Spencer. Gardner, now based in Spain while his two young sons, Remy and Luca, pursue their road racing dreams, will ride a number of iconic Honda grand prix bikes.
Meanwhile, Suzuki will pay tribute to the RG500, a machine that brought world title success for Barry Sheene and paved the way for future championship success by Marco Lucchinelli, Franco Uncini, Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Roberts Jr in RGA, RGB and RGV model configurations.
The RG, which turns 40 in 2014, is two years younger than John McGuinness, but the road racing legend -- who racked up his 20th Isle of Man TT victory last year -- shows no signs of slowing up. His incredible run of success on the Island will be marked by Honda, which will bring along his first TT winning 250cc machine from 1999 as well as his most recent winner.
Other luminaries at Goodwood will include Le Mans 24 Hours victors Jochen Mass and Richard Attwood; the man that put Mini on the motor sport map, 1964 Monte Carlo Rally winner Paddy Hopkirk; Indianapolis 500 victor Kenny Brack; two-time European moto trials champion Sammy Miller; and current Toyota Le Mans driver Anthony Davidson.
Honda has also confirmed that it will use the Festival of Speed to give the brand-new NSX sportscar its world debut.
