Can-Am has unveiled a completely new 1330cc Rotax ACE in-line triple to power its 2014 model 2014 Can-Am Spyder RT, mated to a six-speed transmission and available in manual and semi-automatic configurations.
Spruiking ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) technology, which maximises every aspect of the engine from the valve train to the bore and stroke design to mechanical friction being reduced, peak power is 115hp (85.8kW) at 7250rpm, with 130.1 Nm of torque at 5000rpm.
The RT roadster was previously powered by a derivative of the Rotax 998cc V-twin originally found in the original Aprilia Tuono naked bike, boasting around 106hp and 108Nm.
“The new Rotax 1330 ACE engine totally changes the personality of the Can-Am Spyder RT roadster,” said Gregoire Dupont, Regional General Manager for BRP Asia Pacific.
“The efficiency of the ACE engine provides a maximum fuel range of up to 400km, lowers the cost of ownership and generates 40 per cent more lower-end torque.”
The new six-speed gearbox -- the previous was a five-speeder -- with foot shift and manual clutch comes standard on the base Spyder RT roadster and includes reverse. A semi-automatic, six-speed (including reverse) electronic transmission requires no clutching or manual shifts and is available on the other Spyder RT roadster variations: Spyder RT-S and Spyder RT Limited.
Shifting is done via the left thumb and left forefinger. The engine now ticks over at 3000rpm in ‘cruising’ mode, down from 4700rpm.
Other features of the 2014 Spyder Roadster RT include Dynamic Power Steering (DPS), electronic cruise control, 155 litres of onboard storage, passenger-themed ergonomics, adjustable electric windshield, wind deflectors, heated grips, and new high-end saddle with integrated lumbar supports. The 2014 saddle is also backrest-ready from the factory.
Add-ons for the Spyder RT-S and Spyder RT Limited include items as footboards, new fender design, push- button controls, adjustable rear air suspension, GPS navigation, LED lighting, and exclusive colours and wheels.
The 2014 Can-Am Spyder RT roadster range will be launched at the 2014 Moto Expo in Brisbane
from March 21-23.
