BMW Motorrad has unveiled the latest instalment of the R 1200 GS Adventure, with Australian availability expected to be around March/April, 2014.
The new R 1200 GS Adventure is powered by the same liquid-cooled boxer engine featured on the R 1200 GS, with a displacement of 1170cc and an output of 125hp (92 kW) at 7750rpm. The standout feature of the power unit - introduced last year in the the R 1200 GS is the new precision cooling system (here) which uses water instead of oil as a cooling agent. The six-speed gearbox is now also integrated into the engine housing, along with the wet clutch.
The maintenance-free cardan-shaft drive is positioned on the left-hand side and, with the aim of further improving the rideability of the R 1200 GS Adventure, the flywheel mass has been increased by around 950 grams and an extra vibration damper has been incorporated into the powertrain.
The Adventure is also built around a tubular steel spaceframe. However, it has a larger 30-litre tank (10 litres more than on the R 1200 GS) to allow for an increased range, while the fuel tank itself is now made from lightweight aluminium.
The R 1200 GS Adventure also has 20mm longer suspension travel front and rear than the R 1200 GS, and 10mm more ground clearance than the previous R 1200 GS Adventure.
Seat height options are 890 or 910mm, and the wet weight of the 2014 R 1200 GS Adventure (with fuel tank 90 per cent full) is 260kg, compared to 238 for the R 1200 GS.
The R 1200 GS Adventure comes standard with anti-lock braking, traction control, as well as the two riding modes: "Rain" and "Road. Three further riding modes – “Dynamic”, “Enduro” and “Enduro Pro” -- can be added by ordering the optional Riding mode Pro feature, which is accompanied by anti-lock braking and traction control add-ons for off-road riding.
Semi-active electronic suspension adjustment is also available ex-works.
The R 1200 GS Adventure also has a larger windshield with hand-wheel adjustment, additional air flaps, hand protectors wide off-road footpegs, adjustable, reinforced foot-operated levers, and completely restyled bodywork.
