John Sample Automotive, the Australian importer of Moto Guzzi, has announced pricing for the its two new California 1400 models.
The Custom will retail for $21,990, and the Touring for $24,990. The duo will be on display at the Phillip Island World Superbike expo from February 22-24, and go on sale from May, 2013.
The California 1400s are powered by what the company says is the “largest twin cylinder engine ever made in Europe, able to produce an explosive torque of 120Nm at just 2750rpm”. There’s also rider-by-wire technology which facilitates three riding modes – Touring, sport or rain – as well as traction and cruise control. The air/oil cooled 1380cc 90-degree V-twin also produces 96hp (71kW) at 6500rpm. The transmission is six-speed.
The cylinder heads are massive and eat into the tank’s real estate. Or in Moto Guzzi speak: “A size ratio between the fuel tank and engine which favours the latter.”
The 1400 engine is an evolution of the popular “Quattrovalvole” (four-valve), using the same stroke as the 1151cc engine, but reaches a displacement of 1380cc through a 104mm bore.
Other features include:
LED daylight running lights;
A brand new double cradle frame equipped with an elastic support system, which involves fitting the powertrain to the frame by means of an elastic-kinematic supports system made up of a front rocker, two side rockers and a series of rubber dampeners. This allows the engine to “shake around” its own centre of gravity, filtering out all the vibrations where the rider and passenger are affected; and
A new cardan final drive.
Suspension duties are handled by 46mm forks and twin shocks, and there are Brembo brakes mated to new aluminium-alloy wheels: 18-inch front and 16-inch rear. Fuel tank capacity is 20.5 litres and dry weight is 300kg for the Custom and 319kg for the Touring.
