Kawasaki said it had no information on the new model, and when questioned over whether it would be coming to Australia, were told that an announcement would be made in the next few months.
And here it is – the same bike as we announced, but instead of a 249cc parallel twin fuel-injected powerplant, it will be 296cc -- hence the updated Ninja 300 moniker. And it now puts this story we ran just a few days ago into perspective.
The engine, fed by 32mm throttle bodies, is claimed to produce 38.9hp (28kw) at 11,000rpm and 27Nm at 10,000rpm.
Drawing inspiration from Kawasaki's range-topping litre-class ZX-10R, the new bike shows off an impressively integrated look, boasting flush-fit front indicators, a 'big-bike' muffler, dual headlights, modern LCD instrumentation, and aggressive fairing design with a sporty rear seat cowl.
Throwing down the gauntlet to its rivals, the contemporary new look for the 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 250R is not at the expense of mechanical upgrades.
On the contrary, Kwaka engineers have matched the Ninja 300R's fast image and taken to the new bike with gusto, deploying, a stiffer diamond frame, wider rear tyre (140mm), uprated suspension and a back-torque limiting clutch.
Total curb mass is 172kg, and 174kg for the ABS model. There will also be 'Special Editions' of the Ninja 300, also available in ABS or non-ABS.
Suspension is a 37mm telescopic fork with a Uni Trak rear, adjustable for preload.
Colours are Lime Green (Special Edition), Ebony and Pearl Stardust White, with the Ninja 300 available at Kawasaki dealerships from September, 2012 – so at any tick of the clock. Price is still to be announced.
