BMW Motorrad’s extensively updated R 1200 GS has arrived in Australia, boasting a massive array of changes, including the adoption of water cooling to keep the temperature in check on the legendary Boxer.
The Bikesales Network is now halfway through the two-day test press launch in Victoria, and the three biggest things we’ve noticed so far are the much crisper throttle response, a far greater appetite for revs at the top end, and it now handles twisty, bitumen roads with much more aplomb – and without the need for aggressive leveraging on the bars to get the job done.
The gains have been achieved by adopting such features as the electronic throttle (which allows five separate riding modes to be used) and a completely revised chassis.
Day one of the launch was mostly spent on bitumen, and day two the off-road tyres have been fitted for plenty of trail action, where we’ll be able to use two off-road riding modes called Enduro and Enduro Pro. These modes are tailor-made for off-road riding, such as a recalibration of the ‘slip’ allowed in ABS (if it’s turned on, as it is switchable).
We’ll have a full launch report in coming days.
