Aprilia has thrown its hat into the maxi scooter ring locally in a big way, with the power-packed and electronics-savvy SRV850 to go on sale in June, 2013 for $15,990 (plus on-road costs).
The SRV850 was first launched at the EICMA show in Milan in 2011, taking the mantle as the most powerful maxi scooter away from the Gilera GP 800 -- also part of the huge Piaggio Group.
The company claims it’s the first in the maxi scooter segment to have both anti-lock braking and traction control, the latter offering two-stage adjustment as well as deactivation.
The machine is powered by a 90-degree twin, with a displacement of 839.3cc. Claimed power is 76p (55.9kW) at 7500rpm and torque is 76.4Nm at 6000rpm, while the frame is a double cradle design made from steel tubing. Aprilia claims a ‘coefficient of stability’ at full power similar to a motorcycle -- almost twice as much as a conventional scooter – with lean angles of up to 45 degrees.
The suspension consists of a hydraulic shock absorber mounted laterally in a horizontal position, complete with seven-position preload adjustment, and a 41mm fork. The aluminium wheels are 16-inch, with 120/70 and 160/60 tyres.
Brakes are Brembo, with twin 300mm discs at the front. There are two colours: black or white, and accessories include a titanium and carbon silencer, top box, alarm, tinted windshield, and anodised aluminium footrests.
Other key metrics include a 1593mm wheelbase, 780mm seat height, 18.5-litre fuel capacity and 250kg dry weight.
