2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R and ER-6n

Hot on the heels of the high-speed ZX-14R breaking cover, Kawasaki's 650cc sports touring and naked bike models have been revealed in Europe

Kawasaki is going gangbusters readying new models ahead of the 2011 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, releasing details of its updated 2012 middleweight twins, the ER6f (badged the Ninja 650R in Australia) and ER-6n.

Inside sources are saying that Kawasaki will also unleash a 1000cc version of the Versys at the motorcycle show, an adventure bike that is rumoured to be based on the Z1000. We'll know more about that one soon...

The 2012 ER6f is Kawasaki's user-friendly middleweight sports-tourer, though current owners may struggle to see the new stuff at a glance.

The fairing and headlight design has been massaged rather than revamped but its cousin, the ER-6n gets a more obvious new look thanks to an updated headlight assembly and sharper body work.

Based on the same underpinnings, both 2012 'ER6' Kawasaki models get the same chassis and powertrain improvements, with the 649cc parallel twin-cylinder engine outputting slightly more herbs than the 2011 models' 72hp (53kW) and 66Nm.

Kawasaki says engine performance has been "increased" for both models but hasn't said by how much. It has merely confirmed the torque curve will be flatter and more accessible, improving everyday riding performance.

As the first major update to the bike ER range in six years, the new 2012 model year bikes are held together by an all-new tubular steel frame. A newly designed twin-tube swingarm has also been incorporated.

Kawasaki has made adjustments to the design of the exhaust systems too, and ABS will be offered on both models.

The instrument clusters get a new look and the new tubular steel frame means seat height has been adjusted.

Kawasaki's 2012 ER-6f also shows off its touring sensibility with the addition of a height adjustable windscreen. Form-fitting colour-coded panniers are also optional.

We're awaiting a response from Kawasaki on when the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R will be available in Australia.
