2012 Isle of Man TT

Will records be broken at the 2012 Isle of Man TT, the world's most dangerous motorcycle race? Expectations are high

The 2012 Isle of Man TT has been underway for a few days now, and this year is expected to be special because we could see the TT Zero electric bikes break the magic 100mph barrier.

But the drawcard Superbike category, filled with dozens of modified 1000cc production machines, is the category that always records the fastest times.

This year John McGuinness will be the man to beat, having set the outright lap record (131.57mph) in 2009 on a Honda CBR1000RR, and has been setting the fastest times early in qualifying thus far, also on a Honda Fireblade.

Australia Cameron Donald has been quick too, often within a few points of a mph of 17-times Isle of Man TT champion McGuinness.

Donald is going to be a busy rider too, competing at the pointy end of the Superbike, Supersport, and Superstock categories.

While McGuinness will hoping to add one or two more trophies to his 17-strong Isle of Man TT collection, one of them could be in the TT Zero electric bike race, where he will take the Honda factory-backed Mugen Shinden around the 1-lap race of the 60-odd kilometre Mountain Course.

The first team to break the 100mph average speed barrier around the course will win a cool £10,000 ($16,000).

Here's an "interesting" video too - the official song for the 2012 Isle of Man TT. You might want to turn the volume down... Or off.
