BMW Motorrad will introduce the new 2012 BMW S 1000 RR at $22,290, the same price as the previous model. Included as standard are Race ABS, Dynamic Traction Control and Quick Shift.
On the 2012 model, BMW has left the already potent engine alone while focussing on the handling and aesthetic pieces of the sports bike puzzle.
Both the 46mm upside-down fork and monoshock have new internals for a claimed improvement in damping, while the updated geometry includes new values for the steering head angle, offset, position of the swingarm pivot, and rear shock length – all in the name of even sharper handling and feedback. There’s also a mechanical steering damper adjustable over 10 levels.
Italian Marco Melandri may just have joined BMW’s world Superbike team at the perfect time…
Changes to the geometry have also necessitated modifications to the main frame, which has included enlarging the cross sectional area of the intake air guide through the steering head for greater air flow efficiency.
The instrument cluster has been redesigned for better readability. In addition, the display can now be dimmed and provides more functions. For instance, the lap timer can now present "Best lap in progress", which is going to make the track day set very excited. Fortunately, no “Dud lap in progress” function just yet…
As far as design is concerned, the tail section is now leaner, there have been some discrete changes to the asymmetrical side panels, and the centre airbox cover now sports side aperture grilles.
Colours are racing red/alpine white, sapphire black metallic, BMW Motorrad Motorsport and bluefire. The distinctive RR logo has been slightly modified, and additional visual accents take the form of wheels painted in glossy black and the red spring in the rear shock.
Also the ergonomics have been improved in the form of new heel plates for the rider. And the stabilisers on the passenger footrests have now been designed for a leaner look.
The 2012 S 1000 RR will also become available with an expanded range of optional extras and special equipment ex-works, including some trick stuff from the HP performance catalogue, including a titanium exhaust and race data logger.
Deliveries will commence in February, 2012 -- the same month that the Bikesales Network will ride the new bike at Phillip Island.
