2012 Australian Supercross Championship

The revamped title kicks off in Dubbo on October 13, with the cream of Australasian talent -- and some slick imports -- on display
The new-look 2012 Terex Australian Supercross Championship begins in Dubbo (NSW) on Saturday night (October 13), with the event returning to the traditional ‘Main Event’ format where riders tackle a series of preliminary events to qualify for the final.
That structure will be in place for all senior and junior finals, with the MX1 finale to be held over 20 laps and MX2 over 15. This format was in place for many years before supercross
In MX1, the top five riders from 2011 will all return: reigning champion Jay Marmont (Kawasaki), Tye Simmonds (Honda), Dan McCoy (Yamaha), Billy Mackenzie (Kawasaki) and Lawson Bopping (Yamaha).
But of the quintet, only Mackenzie remains attached to the same manufacturer in 2012, with the Scot now a team-mate to Marmont.
Marmont, who was victorious on a Yamaha in last year’s supercross title, will be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing Australian Motocross Championship campaign, while other big guns to compete in MX1 will include Honda factory duo Ben Townley (pictured) and Ford Dale; Todd Waters (Suzuki), Cheyne Boyd (Honda) and Matt Moss (Suzuki).
Waters pushed New Zealander Josh Coppins to the death knell in the Australian Motocross Championship, and is just back from Belgium where he represented Australia in the 2012 Motocross of Nations alongside Luke Style and Bopping.
"It’s good to be getting back to the format that they race in the US,” Waters said.
"Supercross has been built around that single main event final and I’m definitely looking forward to preparing for it. For us we build a training program around a 20-lap final each night, rather than changing between events, and for the fans it will be easier to follow what’s happening on the track – the race they’re seeing in front of them will be the one that counts.”
Townley is returning from long-term injury, and the US-based Moss is moving up after winning the 2011 MX2 supercross title. And Dale is just starting to realise his massive potential too, having won the 2012 MX2 motocross title after a withering finish to the season.
In the MX2 class, Moss’ move to MX1 means that Honda-backed US import Gavin Faith will be favoured to go one better in 2012, and his biggest threats will include Styke (Yamaha) and Kade Mosig (Kawasaki).
There will be junior events at Dubbo, and the event will be held at Morris Park Speedway, corner of Obley and Belowrie Roads. Other attractions include Monster truck demonstrations, a kids’ Throttle Jockeys arena, fireworks, public pit walks, competitions and trade stalls. The gates open at 5.00pm, with the main racing beginning at 7.00pm.

Following Dubbo, the supercross title heads to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island (Vic) for round two on October 27-28, followed by Toowoomba Showgrounds (Qld) on November 10 and the Newcastle Showgrounds (NSW) on November 17.
