The chase is on to unseat superstar Chris Holder as the Australian solo speedway champion when the 2012 instalment gets underway in North Brisbane Speedway on Saturday, January 8.
A seven-time Australian champion – three senior and four in the under 21 ranks -- Holder has enjoyed another successful season abroad after taking out the 2011 title in commanding fashion.
This form was carried into the British Elite League season where Holder guided the Poole Pirates to an historic Championship/KO Cup double; in addition to claiming his second Speedway GP round win and finishing inside top eight automatic qualifiers for the 2012 series.
This was capped off by a star performance in helping Australia to a runner-up finish in the 2011 Speedway World Cup (SWC), where he top scored for the tournament.
Leading the charge to end Holder’s dominance will be a host of riders with national and international pedigree, including SWC teammates Davey Watt and Troy Batchelor.
A strong end to the British Elite League season with Eastbourne will have Cameron Woodward full of confidence heading into the three-round Championship, where the likes of young guns Cory Gathercole, Taylor Poole and potentially Sam Masters will be also eyeing the national title.
Before the championship proper, a group of 16 riders will be vying for the seven spots still available to compete in the 2012 Australian Solo Speedway Championship through the qualifying event to be held at North Brisbane tonight (January 7).
