KTM rider Toby Price starts as a warm favourite to win three Australian Four-Day Enduros in a row as the 2012 instalment gets underway at Buln Buln, just outside Warragul (Vic), today. The event’s epicentre – or the Parc Ferme as it’s known in the trade -- will be at the Buln Buln Sports Ground.
The A4DE, sponsored by Yamaha in 2012, will again see Australia’s biggest names take part, including Price, Ben Grabham (KTM), Matt Phillips (Yamaha), Glenn Kearney (Husqvarna), Stefan Merriman (Yamaha), Daniel Milner (Yamaha) and Jarrod Bewley (Yamaha). Only the American-based New South Welshman Josh Strang is a notable absentee from the local stocks, while Italian Alex Salvini (Husqvarna) is the big-name international visitor.
Kearney, Milner, Chris Hollis, Phillips, Strang and Price recently combined as Team Australia to finish a superb second place in the 2012 International Six-Day Enduro in Germany, with all but Kearney and Hollis finishing top 10 in their individual classes. Salvini was also a leading figure at the ISDE, so the battle between him and Australia’s best should go down to the wire in the A4DE, which concludes on Saturday. Over 150 riders will be involved in this year’s competition, with the event also hosting state versus state battles, the Oceania Challenge, and trade and club team duels.
“We’re really looking forward to the A4DE,” Price said.
“Hopefully we can get a good result there, it’s a very important race on the schedule for us and it’s an event that I really enjoy as a rider. The plan is to climb on top of the podium and cap off what has been a great year. Riding for me has been limited lately after my rib injuries at the ISDE, but we’ll see how it goes!”
There are three main A4DE classes: E1, E2 and E3. The likes of Price, Phillips, Kearney and will be in E2, with the other classes hosting fewer top guns: Salvini, Milner and Bewley are in E1, and the veteran Merriman is in E3. Times across all classes are collated to work out an outright winner.
In yesterday’s prologue, Price came out on top from Phillips, Merriman and Salvini. Phillips, 18, was just one second off Price’s time around the grass track special test.
“I was consistent -- made sure I didn’t have any bingles or fall off... it was just important to get through the day,” Phillips said.
“It’s going to be a tight, technical four-day -- weaving in and out of trees in a lot of the tests. I’ll have to be careful and not have any crashes or hit any trees. That will play a big part in it.
“I definitely have a point to prove on behalf of Yamaha that the WR450F is the best bike for the job - which I believe wholeheartedly.”
