2011 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 ABS on sale

Team Green has launched its new sportstouring machine in Australia, priced just $500 above the donor Z1000

The newest addition to Kawasaki's sports-touring range has arrived in Australian dealerships, the 2011 Ninja 1000 ABS, priced from $16,999 plus on-road costs.

Powered by the Z1000's engine, which has been shoe-horned into a fully-faired package designed for consuming long distances with ease, the new model "combines the attitude and excitement of a high-performance supersport with a relaxed riding position and clever features designed for everyday convenience," according to Kawasaki.

There's been a lot of talk about the new model, a lot of it very positive from readers who tell us this bike would be an ideal everyday motorcycle. But there has also been some confusion over the name of the new model.

With the all-new 200hp (147kW) Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R on its way to Australia in early 2011, the arrival of the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 ABS has caused some to question the naming convention used. One is a hard-charging track-tool, the other is a less aggressive, more comfortable sports bike and both are powered by litre-class engines.

Anyway, the touring-oriented Ninja 1000 ABS is here and it's yours for around $17k, and it's based on the Z1000 naked bike, using the same 1043cc inline four-cylinder engine outputting 136hp (101kW) and 110Nm.

The Ninja 1000 also gets the Z1000's aluminium frame, plus the same suspension and brakes. The major difference is that it adds a full fairing, mounts for panniers/top box, a three-way manually adjustable windscreen and a larger 19lt fuel tank.

Clip-on handlebars are repositioned for a more comfortable riding position than the Z1000 and the revised rear section sports a pair of pillion grab handles. For more details on the just-launched bike, such as the adjustable suspension, check out the 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 yarn. And stay tuned for a road test of the new model too.

The new Ninja 1000 ABS will be offered in two colours, Candy Lime Green with Ebony or just plain Ebony, and will be available with a plethora of optional touring accessories.
