The new Blackline motorcycle from Harley-Davidson is a Softail model “pared to the bone”, says the company, as well as “celebrating three fundamental elements of motorcycling: mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead”.
That’s quite a lot of passion in one sentence, but here’s what H-D is offering in its latest dark custom:
New powertrain styling, finished in gloss black powdercoat on the rocker box covers, the crankcase, the outer primary cove and the transmission side cover. The cylinders are silver powdercoat with machined highlights. The derby cover and timing covers are chromed.
A rigid-mounted counter-balanced Twin Cam 96 cubic inch fuel injected V-twin rated at 120.7Nm peak torque at 3250 pm.
A six-speed transmission.
A new, round air cleaner cover in brilliant chrome.
A new, black denim powdercoat on the frame and swingarm.
New laced aluminium wheels with black anodised rims. Wheel sizes are 21-inch (front) and 16-inch, gripped by Dunlop D 402 rubber.
A new FX front end with black powdercoat triple clamps and black painted fork lowers.
New split drag internally wired handlebars which mount directly to the top triple clamp.
A new symmetric 18-litre Softail fuel tank which is ‘clean’ on the left side with a low-profile fuel fill on the right.
A new analogue speedometer on a triple-clamp mount that also holds indicator lights. The LCD screen on the speedometer includes low-fuel warning and “miles to empty” display function.
A new bobbed rear fender with combination stop/tail/turn lights in black housings, and a new composite license plate holder and light module that mounts on the lower edge of the fender.
New forged rear fender supports are finished in Black Denim powdercoat.
A new one-piece two-up seat and passenger pillion. Rider seat height is 630mm, the lowest two-up seat offered by Harley-Davidson. Gap between the nose of seat and fuel tank exposes the top of the frame.
A new 5.75-inch diameter headlamp in gloss black shell.
Polished forward foot controls.
An over/under chrome shotgun exhaust.
Optional security package with anti-lock braking and'smart' security system
Availability and price in Australia are still to be announced, but we'll know more tomorrow (March 11) when we check out the bike at the 2011 Sydney Tattoo & Body Art Expo, where Harley-Davidson has a trade stand. The new XL1200 Custom will also be on display at the expo.
