Suzuki's highly-anticipated 2011 GSX-R600 is now on sale, the model sporting a host of improvements - not least of which is a staggering 9kg reduction in overall weight.
Suzuki says the bike's 599cc, 16-valve, DOHC, in-line four-cyclinder powerplant has a class-leading power to weight ratio, and features redesigned pistons and camshafts plus a refined ignition control. Harnessing Finite Element Method design technology also employed in the production of MotoGP engines, each piston is now said to be some 78g lighter.
The fuel-injected unit is also equipped with S-DMS (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector), which allows the rider to choose between two different power maps to suit the prevailing conditions, while the power is dished out via a six-speed gearbox with revised ratios.
A huge emphasis has been placed on redesigning the bike's twin-spar aluminium frame, which is now 1.35kg lighter. The wheelbase is now 15mm shorter, with a shorter reach for the rider to the handlebars, while the new compact bodywork is said to be 35 percent lighter. The fuel tank has been reshaped and new instumentation now features timer and stopwatch functions, while vertically-stacked headlights and integrated mirror/indicators also help to create an edgey new look.
Further weight reductions have been made with the addition of a new exhaust (saving 1.7kg) and a Showa Big Piston fork (saving 890g), while slowing the show is set of radial-mount, four-piston Brembo front calipers, matched to a single-piston set-up at the rear.
All up, Suzuki claims the 2011-spec model tips the scales at a wet weight of just 187kg, while it's remaining tight-lipped when it comes to quoting any power or torque figures.
The new GSX-R600 is available in Metallic Triton Blue/Glass Spash White, Metallic Matt Black/Pearl Mirage White or Glass Sparkle Black. The model retails for $15,690 (plus on-roads), and comes with Suzuki's 24-month, unlimited kilometre warranty. For more information visit the the Suzuki Motorcycles website.
