Not all goes to plan, and this year there were plenty of letdowns and anti-climaxes in motorcycling. Sport's the biggest spoiler, but there were others...

Troy Corser’s final year in world Superbike. For a man of such talent it was a disaster, and he spent most of the time battling with riders who would have been cannon fodder for him in past years. Not a way you want to see a legend bow out. And another: when is the motorcycle industry going to catch up and start officially releasing monthly retail data monthly rather than quarterly. Come on, we’re all big boys now.

MV Agusta taking its sweet time releasing the F3 and Brutale F3. Just give us the freaking bikes! Almost production ready bikes were seen mid-way through 2011, but ultimately it's probably a good thing to undertake an extensive testing phase.

Not so much a disappointment as a tragedy – the sad death of Marco Simoncelli at the Malaysian Grand Prix in October. ‘Super Sic’ added a slash of vibrant colour and personality to a largely drab field and his passing is a dark reminder of the risks these athletes take as they go about their business.
