2011 BMW GS Safari

This year's event will start in NSW and finish in SA during September, with sensational scenery including a full Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges

This year’s BMW GS Safari will be held from September 18-24, commencing in Broken Hill (NSW) before riders explore the Flinders Ranges, a full Lake Eyre and the coastline down to Port Lincoln.

The Safari formula is a proven winner. Lead riders mark a course and participants also have route sheets and GPS routes, so there is little chance of taking a wrong turn.

Participants leave each morning in their own time (this is not a large group ride), usually riding in small groups and stopping at their leisure.

Food and fuel stops are marked on the route sheets as well as places of interest, so participants have the best chance to see the popular spots.

Typically riders will be in the saddle each day for around 6-7 hours and will cover about 500km. They are free to go at their own pace and stop to check out attractions along the way as they please. Support vehicles including a luggage truck, tyre support truck and 4WD sweep vehicle.

At the end of each day there is a designated meeting place to brief for the next day and collect the next route sheet.

BMW Motorrad Marketing Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Miles Davis is looking forward to the ride.

“I have recently ridden over much of the course and it is stunningly beautiful,” he said. “The GS Safari will give BMW GS riders an unforgettable experience as well as testing their ability over a variety of off-road conditions.”

Participants can book budget accommodation through to five-star (when available), with the opportunity to sleep in a tent one evening as some of our destinations are very remote!

With a focus on flexibility, participants can ride to the start point, or have their bike trucked and fly in. There is also the same option at the finishing point for those with limited time.

The 2011 Safari will begin on September 19. From there riders will tackle the Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre, Roxby Downs, Pimba, Glendambo, Streaky Bay and Eyre Peninsula before finishing in Port Lincoln on September 23.

A two-day GS training course will be held in Broken Hill on September 17-18 prior to the event.
