2009 New Zealand Superbike Championship ready to rock

Aussie Robbie Bugden to defend premier title

December 30, 2008

The 2009 Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championship begins at Teretonga on January 10-11, with Aussie Robbie Bugden (Suzuki) out to retain his mantle as the Trans-Tasman master.

Bugden's opposition in the newly named New Zealand Superbike class will come from compatriot Gareth Jones (Yamaha) and local posse Andrew Stroud (Suzuki), Ray Clee (Suzuki), Craig Shirriffs (Honda) Hayden Fitzgerald (Honda)

The 600 Sports Production class will be just as hard and fast as the big class. Dennis Charlett (Suzuki) will be out to defend his title, but the Christchurch grandfather will not have it all his own way, with the return of 2007 champion Sam Smith (Yamaha) after a disappointing season in Superbikes last year.

Jones will also double up in 600 Sports Production.

The smaller classes will include 125 GP, Formula Three, Pro-twins 650 and Sidecars.

The full championship calendar is as follows:

Rd 1:  Teretonga, Invercargill -- January 10-11
Rd 2:  Levels, Timaru -- January 17-18
Rd 3:  Ruapuna, Christchurch -- January 24-25 (includes NZ GPs)
Rd 4: Manfeild, Feilding -- February 14-15
Rd 5: Pukekohe, Auckland -- March 7-8 (includes NZ TTs)
