For those of you who believe lightning speed is the main ingredient for spectacular motorcycle racing, then I implore you to get along to Pacific Park Motorcycle Complex in South Maroota (NSW) on the weekend of August 29-30 to be put in your place.
That’s when the 2009 Xispa Australian Moto Trials Championship will be held, and it’s one category of racing where speed is superfluous.
Rather, it’s the skill of overcoming difficult and various types of terrain without stopping or allowing their feet to touch the ground which ultimately wins the day.
It’s amazing to watch, especially when the top riders are in full flight launching from rocks to ledges to vertical walls.
The competitive sections at Pacific Park, just 65km from the Sydney CBD on the Hawkesbury River, will be set within easy walking distance of the central pit area, and spectators can stand just metres from the riders as they ply their trade. That’s a level of accessibility which is simply not allowed in other forms of motorcycle racing.
Multiple Australian champion Colin Zarczynski is again the rider to beat in 2009, but he was recently bested in the NSW title by young gun Kyle Middleton.
Other contenders will include Colin’s older sibling Kevin Zarczynski and former junior star Jake Walker.
A past winner of the Aussie title is Stefan Merriman, who then switched disciplines and went onto clinch four world enduro championships.
Colin, who hasn’t been defeated in the Aussie title since 2004, will also represent Australia in the 2009 Trial des Nations in Italy, where he will be joined by Middleton, Trevor Campbell and Dylan Rees.

Finally, for those of you who are wondering where the term “Xispa” comes from, it’s a new Spanish brand, which is about to go on sale in Australia.
The Australian importer will be bringing in 125cc, 250cc and 280cc twos-stroke machines, with pricing still to be announced.

And if someone can tell me how to pronounce “Xispa”, I will be indebted to you forever.
