2008 Australian Dirt Track Championship

Where road race champions are made

Australia has one of the best apprenticeship systems in the world for aspiring road racers - and it's not junior road racing.

Instead, it's dirt track competition, where the likes of Casey Stoner, Anthony West and Chris Vermeulen learnt to steer and slide bikes before going road racing.

Stoner, in particular, was a junior colossus, as BikePoint found out when it pored over the results from one national title meeting in the mid 1990s. The little bugger won everything - and probably still found time to play with his digger in between races.

In all, he won 41 national long and dirt track titles.

Click here to check out the results from last weekend's Aussie title in Queensland - and jot down a few of the names for future reference.
