100th IoM fires up

The centenary of motorcycling's most famous race meeting is underway

The 100th anniversary Isle of Man meeting is underway, with Briton John McGuinness dominating early practice with a stunning 128.492mph (207km/h) lap on his HM Plant Honda. That's an unofficial Superbike lap record, but still not quite matching last year's best time in the Senior TT.

"It's like everything that you ever wanted to do but aren't allowed to do because otherwise you get jailed by the police. It's not just a road, it's a part of history," he told Reuters after lapping the 37.73 mile (60.3km) course.

"If you win, there's no better feeling in the world."

Some very big names are expected to do laps of honour in front of record crowds during the festival, including the likes of Jim Redman on a 1964 250 Honda and Giacomo Agostini on an MV Agusta.
