Royal Enfield has the modern classic segment firmly in its grip in Australia—no other brand offers anything quite like the Classic 350 or 650. Triumph’s Bonneville, while a fine machine, is water-cooled and costs nearly twice as much as an Interceptor 650.
Honda’s attempt to enter the market with the GB350 has fallen flat, and Triumph’s partnership with Indian manufacturer Bajaj for the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X has been marred by quality issues that seem to be pushing riders away rather than attracting new ones.
KTM’s financial stability is anyone’s guess, while Harley-Davidson’s collaboration with China’s QJ Motors has produced the rather unfortunate-looking X350 and X500. Meanwhile, the Japanese brands appear more focused on designing the next generation of Transformer robots than on classic motorcycles.
When Royal Enfield set out to attract a younger generation of riders, they turned to the proven Himalayan 450 platform and built the Guerrilla 450. The result is a bike that’s far more engaging than you might expect. With its 17-inch front wheel, it slices through corners with the precision of Marquez in MotoGP this season.
