These bikes were built in the Superbike race factory, not the production road bike factory. No other Ducati has been as successful or dominant in successive years as the 888 in 1991, 1992, 1993 winning 62 races, 35 second places and 29 thirds, along with the 1991, 1992, and 1993 Superbike World Championships. This is a very rare limited edition Homologation Special bike, number 143 of only 500 made. As race bikes, many were raced and crashed, hence, they have become very rare today.
The final 888 sport production was the 888 SP5 of 1993 with the higher-performance SP5 engine, but with an SP4 cooling system. This continued to set the performance standard for twin-cylinder motorcycles worldwide. All the usual SP features were retained, including twin injectors, pankl con-rods, full floating front disc brake and close-ratio gearbox. There were also a few updates on the chassis. The frame and wheels were painted bronze and a Showa front fork replaced the problematic Ohlins of the SP4, while retaining the sublime Ohlins suspension at the rear. Also added, were termignoni carbon-fiber mufflers, and fully floating rear disc brake and braided-steel brake lines. Although there have been annual limited higher-performance series since the 888, the 888 SP5's were different. These machines were loud, hard edged race bikes offering considerably more performance than an 851 or 888 strada. They were also built in fewer numbers than later SP's, and their rarity has resulted in high appreciation of their qualities, huge desirability which has seen the 888 SP5 firmly fixed as one of the top, most sought after, collectable and expensive Ducatis ever made.
This particular SP5 is in excellent original condition, no accidents, not raced, original low 16,570 kilometres, in a private collection for the past 21 years. Original patina, a very rare find.
If you can only have one bike, this is it. Unbelievable to ride, or simply admire it's beautiful, elegant design.
Just the sound of that remarkable, brutal engine, unreal!
A statement piece in any garage or collection.
