In 1990 Bimota produced 60 very special versions of their widely acclaimed YB6, which received a number of racing orientated upgrades including fuel injection that helped achieve 150HP from the FZR1000 powerplant. In typical Bimota fashion, the weight was also reduced to an incredible 167kg, a factor that no doubt helped a claimed top speed of 272KPH making the YB6 Tuatara the fastest production bike available.
The name Tuatara comes from a 200million year old New Zealand reptile, famous for moving very slowly; clearly no shortage of humour in the little Rimini facility.
This is an incredibly rare piece of history from the giant-slaying tiny factory from Rimini. The YB6 was, like all Bimotas, a finely crafted instrument, designed by Massimo Tamburini and built by hand by master craftsmen who were dedicated to making the best sports motorcycles in the world. From the fork stanchion and triple trees to the axles and rearsets, the parts of the YB6 are hand-machined, ultra light, and simply gorgeous. Moto Sprint called it, “a machine which can offer enormous satisfaction in driving, even though in all likelihood most of the lucky owners will prefer to transform this bike into a cult object, strictly to be admired, rather than subject it to the torture of the track.” The YB6 Tuatara is indeed a cult machine that is gaining traction with the public as an object of tremendous historical value.
This example is in exceptional near mint condition having been in the collection of a motorcycle enthusiast for some years. It has been recently recommissioned with a full service and new tyres. It is currently registered on NSW Historic plates which are non transferable. It has only 8,000kms on the clock.
It rides and handles superbly as you would expect, lightening fast and exceptional cornering with the quickest engine of its day, the Yamaha FZR1000 weighing only 167kg.
With nothing to spend this highly collectible and super rare prime example will appreciate.
Inspections welcome in Eastern Suburbs for serious buyers. No test rides without cash in hand.
