I purchased this VF750 in May 2021 as a project. It had a noise in the motor. I found a very worn rocker arm, and minor pitting on the camshaft. A new O.E.M. Rocker and shaft repair by Clive Cams in Melbourne did not fix the noise. I disassembled the motor to check the bottom end. It was fine, but a leaking head gasket had allowed water to sit in Number 4 cylinder while unused.
The cylinder wall was pitted, and the noise appeared to be piston slap. The motor sat in the corner for 2 years while I did other projects. Then came time to revisit it.
Looking at the overall value of the bike I decided to rebore the one damaged cylinder only to 1mm o.s., the others being fine and standard. The result of this is number 4 is about 5cc larger than the others. My motorcycle savvy neighbour says it will now pull to the right, but I think he is pulling my leg!
This may upset the purists, but the end result with all new gaskets, valve guide seals and cam chains (which it didn’t need after laying old and new side by side) was a motor which runs beautifully, and a bike which is not a show piece, but has been a solid reliable toy for two years.
Cosmetically not a pristine example. Nothing unfixable, it depends on the purchases level, show bike (with a lot or work and new parts eg, exhaust system,) or daily ride – ready to go. Mechanically it has been very reliable since the rebuild and has never let me down.
It has 92,282 kms on the clock, but the instruments were from another bike. In reality the motor has done more like 70,000 Kms. Chain, sprockets, brake pads and steering head bearings are all fine. I still ride it often so tyres are getting down now. Rego is Special Interest and not transferrable.
