- Fritz Egli ‘Black Shadow’ Special
- Globally significant bike
World famous Swiss motorcycle manufacturer and tuner Fritz W Egli has been at the forefront of Vincent tuning for more than 50 years. He came to prominence at the Geneva motorcycle show in 1967 with his Lightening spec Vincent Special and has been building fast Vincents ever since. For many of those years he had a personal vintage Vincent road bike, and this is it! Brought to Australia by a prominent Sydney doctor who lobbied Egli for years to be able to acquire the famous machine, it is a 1952 C-series Vincent Rapide which was dispatched from the Stevenage factory to a dealer in Zurich, Switzerland. Its ‘Black Shadow’ engine had been dispatched to the very same dealer two years previously.
In an email from Fritz W Egli when quizzed about the mismatched frame and engine numbers of his Vincent ‘Black Shadow’ Special, Egli explained the following.
Quote
"About Shadow engine - Rapide Frame : "I often swapped engines when racing, doing tuning, development work. I never cared about ‘matching numbers’".
"Important to me was(is) the perfect technical condition. "Numbers" don't make a bike fast, or reliable. Today there are 'amazing' people, they rather pay a fortune for a clapped out 'matching number' Shadow, or Lightning, then for a mint condition 'non matching number' bike... But everybody is allowed to have his own philosophy, what is right for me, can be wrong for a other. " (This email from Fritz is available for verification).
Although he had many Vincents over the years, this bike was his own personal classic which he maintained to be the fastest and best handling Vincent period. Presented in iconic ‘Black Shadow’ ry, and Vincent Lightning engine specification, it’s in great condition, it ranks amongst other rare Vincents of the world, such as Rollie Free's lightning, Marty Dickerson's super charged Vincent and Jack Ehret's Lightning as one of the most significant and legendary Vincent motorcycles globally. This bike is in excellent running condition, ready to ride or collect.
